CLUB HISTORY

Club Founder

Arthur William Moore CVO MA JP (1853-1909)

Arthur William Moore was born in Cronkborne, Braddan. He was the son of William Fine Moore MHK and a descendant of Illiam Dhone. He was educated at Rugby School and at Trinity College, Cambridge. Thereafter he assisted his father in the management of the sailcloth manufactory, and on his father's death in the eighties, he succeeded to the business. He was also a great sportsman, being a blue whilst at Cambridge, an active rower, and a founding member of Cronkbourne Cricket Club, an organisation which for many years could hold its own throughout the Island.

He formed the Club among the workpeople at Tromode on his return to the Island and it should be said that Mr Moore bore the entire cost of forming and furnishing the club and of laying the ground. Though he long ago abandoned active participation in games, Mr Moore never lost interest in them, and he was always a constant advocate of the desirability of cultivation of mind and body going hand in hand. The Club continued to thrive, although it is said the sport was not taken up by the youth in the rest of the Island.

Arthur William Moore is proposed for inclusion in the Manx Patriots’ Roll of Honour for championing the rights and privileges of the House of Keys, as its Speaker between 1898-1909, in a number of disputes with the Governor and Council. He took part in drawing up the petition for the reform of the Manx Constitution in 1907. He was also greatly involved in the preservation and development of Manx culture and language.

The history of the Club up to and beyond the First World War is very obscure although it is believed the Club were still playing at Tromode in 1936.

After the Second World War the Club moved and established its home ground in Nobles Park Douglas. However in 1978 the Club commenced building work on a new pavilion at King George V park and finally moved into their new home in 1979 subsequent to an EGM which was held at the Nursery Hotel, Onchan..
