To all the “Shoebox Donators” at Cronkbourne Bacchanalians Hockey Club

Cronkbourne Bacchanalians Hockey Club donated 16 fantastic boxes, to the Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Appeal.  Brilliant!  These lovely boxes will bring so much joy to children for whom this will probably be their only gift this year.

Thanks so much for taking the time and making the effort to participate in this “Appeal” by filling shoeboxes for needy children.  When I know where the boxes are going this year I will let you know.

Kind regards

IOMA Cronkbourne Bacchas Hockey Under 12 boys

National Finals Cannock May 15th 2011

IOMA Bacchas boys showed strength of character, resolve and determination in the National Mini Hockey Finals at Cannock last weekend.

Ollie Garrett (GK), George Harrison, Basti Murphy, Sam Riordan, James Harrison, Tom Evans (C), Patrick Cox, Charles Rimmer and Robert Webster, many of whom are still only 10 years old, were up against some of the best talented young players in the country and  they played hockey at a level unknown to any of them in their short careers.

The first match was against Woking and the boys predictably started well if a little nervously.   They went a goal down but almost from the restart, Sam Riordan took the ball from the back and split open their defence to equalise so at half time it was 1 – 1.  It was fairly even in the second half and we were hoping for a draw but unfortunately, in the dying seconds of the match, Woking managed to sneak a second goal and the boys did not have time to get another back.

The second game was against Burton, and the boys were a little more relaxed.  The passing was much better and they soon gained confidence as they took control of the game.  A well taken short corner saw Tom Evans’s shot going slightly wide but James Harrison was on the post to tap it in.  Two goals in open play from Tom Evans gave them a comfortable 3 – 0 cushion, and Burton were only able to pull one back in the second half.

A long break followed this game as the pitches are water based and were watered regularly during the afternoon.

Next up was Avalon, a strong team from the West Country.  After a good start with a shot on target from James in the first 30 seconds, Avalon raised their game and the boys struggled to settle and play their game.  It was a more physical game and Tom had to take a short break after a nasty knock to his finger.  They were 1 – 0 down at half time, but Avalon then scored two quick goals in the early minutes of the second half and the boys were not able to break through the Avalon defence but they showed their fighting spirit and kept working hard right until the final whistle.

There was then another very long break before they faced Old Loughtonians from Essex.  This was always going to be a tough match as they were undefeated and top of the pool with a big goal difference.  They were an excellent side with some real young talent and one of their goals was a drag flick from the edge of the circle that Ollie had no chance of saving.  The boys weren’t allowed any time on the ball and although they became quite disheartened, they kept fighting but lost 7 – 0.

Understandably they came off quite despondent and almost immediately had to go into their final game, a7th / 8th play-off game, against Ben Rhydding, the side they beat in the Regional Final in Leeds in April.

Despite coming straight after that heavy defeat, and the fact Ben Rhydding had just won their final pool game, the boys really pulled together and showed why they had got to the National Finals.  Their passing was much better and they showed their characteristic teamwork , strength and determination.  A goal from James Harrison in the first half boosted their confidence, and then some truly solid defending in the second half did not allow Ben Rhydding to get any back and the score finished as 1 – 0.

Overall they finished in 7th position in the table of Under 12 boys teams in England, a great achievement for such a small club, when up against some of the largest clubs in Britain, and a great boost for Isle of Man Hockey.

England Hockey Board’s U12 Yazoo Mini Hockey National Clubs Championships for boys and girls got underway on Sunday 30th January and Sunday 6th February at the National Sports Centre.

The Manx Hockey Association runs a County round for all local Manx Hockey Clubs to enter, with the winners of both the boys and girls representing the Isle of Man at the Regional rounds.

The girl’s tournament took place on 30th January with Vikings, Bacchas, Harlequins and Castletown all entering a team. There were some close matches on display throughout the tournament with the final match between Castletown and Bacchas going to penalty flicks, and Castletown the eventual winners.

Sunday 6th February saw the boy’s tournament take place. Teams from Vikings, Bacchas, Ramsey and Castletown all took part, with the winning team being decided during the final match between Bacchas and Castletown, with Bacchas taking the honours 3-2.

Over the two weekends there was a great standard of hockey on display which is excellent news for the Development of Hockey throughout the Island and acknowledges the hard work of the MHA Junior Committee and the support of Manx Hockey Association’s sponsors Wi-Manx.

JUNIOR REGIONAL FINALS

IOMA Cronkbourne Bacchanalians Juniors have just returned from a weekend in Leeds competing in the Yazoo Under 12 Regional Finals.  Having won both boys and girls tournaments on the Island, twenty children and plenty of supporters set off on Saturday morning ready to play some of the north of England’s best junior teams.   The event took place at Weetwood Sports Pavilion, home of England Hockey’s North Office.

Our girls were up against very tough opposition, playing against Alderley Edge, York, Kirby Lonsdale and Tameside.  Although it was an under 12 tournament, all our girls were under 11, with our youngest only 8.  We looked tiny in comparison to all the other teams, and unfortunately lost all four games.  However our girls put up a great fight and were unlucky not to get a draw against Tameside.   Laura Corkhill was kept busy in goal, and made some fantastic saves.  At the other end, our strikers were unlucky not to put a few goals away, with some great saves and a couple just missing by millimetres.

The boys fared better.  Although nervous in the first game against Western Lakes (having just witnessed an under 10 boy get hit in the face and carried off), they played extremely well losing by 1 – 0.  The second game was against Deeside Ramblers, the favourites to win the group.  We went 1 – 0 up thanks to a spectacular goal by Dylan Fearon.  Unfortunately the strength of the older boys from Deeside showed through later in the game and they scored two goals to take the game 2 – 1.

By the third game our boys were fired up and gaining in confidence and beat Tameside 3 – 0, thanks to goals from Tom Evans (2) and Sam Riordan.  This was probably the best they have ever played and the passing was superb.

They were still in with a chance of getting through to the semis if they beat Bradford in the last game, but were starting to tire.  They managed a 0 – 0 draw but it wasn’t quite enough to take them through.

One of the highlights of the day was meeting and having photos taken with Alastair Brogdon, a young England International, who was there supporting the event.

It was a great experience for all the children, and they and their parents should be very proud of their achievement and for being such good ambassadors for the Island.
