JUNIOR REGIONAL FINALS

IOMA Cronkbourne Bacchanalians Juniors have just returned from a weekend in Leeds competing in the Yazoo Under 12 Regional Finals.  Having won both boys and girls tournaments on the Island, twenty children and plenty of supporters set off on Saturday morning ready to play some of the north of England’s best junior teams.   The event took place at Weetwood Sports Pavilion, home of England Hockey’s North Office.

Our girls were up against very tough opposition, playing against Alderley Edge, York, Kirby Lonsdale and Tameside.  Although it was an under 12 tournament, all our girls were under 11, with our youngest only 8.  We looked tiny in comparison to all the other teams, and unfortunately lost all four games.  However our girls put up a great fight and were unlucky not to get a draw against Tameside.   Laura Corkhill was kept busy in goal, and made some fantastic saves.  At the other end, our strikers were unlucky not to put a few goals away, with some great saves and a couple just missing by millimetres.

The boys fared better.  Although nervous in the first game against Western Lakes (having just witnessed an under 10 boy get hit in the face and carried off), they played extremely well losing by 1 – 0.  The second game was against Deeside Ramblers, the favourites to win the group.  We went 1 – 0 up thanks to a spectacular goal by Dylan Fearon.  Unfortunately the strength of the older boys from Deeside showed through later in the game and they scored two goals to take the game 2 – 1.

By the third game our boys were fired up and gaining in confidence and beat Tameside 3 – 0, thanks to goals from Tom Evans (2) and Sam Riordan.  This was probably the best they have ever played and the passing was superb.

They were still in with a chance of getting through to the semis if they beat Bradford in the last game, but were starting to tire.  They managed a 0 – 0 draw but it wasn’t quite enough to take them through.

One of the highlights of the day was meeting and having photos taken with Alastair Brogdon, a young England International, who was there supporting the event.

It was a great experience for all the children, and they and their parents should be very proud of their achievement and for being such good ambassadors for the Island.
