In a close encounter at Tromode on Saturday Cronkbourne managed to eventually come out on top despite some stiff resistance put up by a valiant Valkyres team. Indeed it looked at one point as though the points would be heading in the other direction as Valkyres posted a challenging total of 229 for 8 in their 40 overs. Bob Bennett once again was in fine form easily dealing with our attack and he was ably assisted by cameo knocks from skipper Zubair Siddiqui and veteran Tom Reader, whose wooly bunnet did its best to distract us. Jaco Jansen was the pick of our bowling on an afternoon where all our bowlers struggled to strike anything closely resembling consistent line & length.
In reply we started solidly but when both openers Max and Jaco departed in close order it looked as though advantage had passed back to the Valkyres outfit. However some mature and measured batting from Adam Killey (42) and Carl Wagstaffe (61) along with some splendid stroke play from Paul Haswell (29) soon had us back on track for an improbable victory. All three fell before victory was secured but Ryan Burns and Dave Smith safely saw us home with an over and 5 wickets to spare.
The supporting faithful, although once again being put through the wringer, enjoyed an engrossing afternoon’s cricket and it was great to see our younger members batting so sensibly. However the bowling and also fielding needs some serious attention if not a complete service & overhaul.
